Spring Cleaning?

SPRINGSpring has sprung!  Although I spent a week in Washington DC that ended with a few inches of snow and no cherry blossoms along the tidal basin yet, so it didn’t feel very springy to me!

Spring is a time of new growth.  People get the spring cleaning bug.  Please feel antsy and restless and want to get outside and move around.  Spring is a great time of year.

It’s also the perfect time to review your marketing strategy and see if you are on track to reach your goals for the year.

If you aren’t sure you are going to reach your goals, you still have time to ramp things up.  Start by a free consultation to determine what areas you are lacking and where you need to focus on to create growth.  Request your free consultation here: http://www.ecombuffet.com/Consultation-request.htm

And in the spirit of focusing on growth and on cleaning out the cobwebs and freshening things up, I wanted to share a few tips with you today.  These are a random collection of tips to help site owners, so read through them and take what you will from them!

For ecommerce site owners: are your product descriptions unique or are you using descriptions from the manufacturer?  If they aren’t unique, now is the time to get to work and get them done.  It may be a big project but you can always break it into baby steps and just do a few a day.

Are you using Google’s author/publisher tags?  You can increase click-through rates by including the author tag and seeing their picture appear in the SERPs

Check conversion rates in Google Analytics for different browser types. If there are errors on some browsers you could be losing qualified traffic.  It’s definitely a good idea to do cross-browser testing.

When in doubt: Quality content will protect you against algorithm updates.

Consider using  ‘what’ ‘need’ and ‘how’ keywords – it’s a great way to find new and longtail phrases.

Google MUST be able to associate your website with your location for your site to appear in local results, so ensure your address is on your site and in your Google page.

TinEye.com reverse image search will help you track down who’s using your images.  Once you find the offenders, reach out and ask for a link in exchange for use of the image.

Use FollowerWonk to find out what your influencers are interested in.

Use tweetarchivist.com to find linking opportunities.

Don’t overlook your geotargeting setting! 25% of sites have the wrong geotargeting setting, according to Google.

Not Another Social Media Post?

Not another article about social media.  Hasn’t it all been said before?

Maybe (although I doubt it, because we are always learning and testing new things).  But even if it has been said before, not everyone was listening because I’m still seeing the same mistakes being made out there.

So here we go again…let’s look at what makes a good social media campaign.

Let me start with some social media truths…

  • You won’t build true social media momentum overnight.  It is a commitment to a marketing strategy and you have to know that going in.
  • You will not succeed if you go in with blinders on and the only thing you can see is YOUR agenda.  Social media is about interaction and relationships.
  • Social media is about numbers but most people look at the wrong numbers.  It doesn’t matter how many followers you have.  It matters how many followers are engaged!  How many followers read, click links, respond and retweet (or like/share/+1).  You could have 100,000,000 followers and not get a single lead out of that.  Focus on the right numbers and you’ll learn where you need to improve.
  • Social media does have the potential to generate buzz, excitement, leads, sales, referrals, connections etc.   You may not be able to relate to it, you may not want to use it personally but the stats show that enough people do relate to it and do use it (as a source of entertainment, as a resource for information and as a place to get referrals so they can buy products and services).  Twitter is now proven as a marketing concept.  The only question that remains is can you figure out how to properly use it to make it a successful marketing strategy for your business?

Let’s look at some of the buzz words that are tossed around in all the articles and Blog posts out there:

-          Share

-          Like

-          Engage

-          Offer value

-          Attract

-          Quality content

-          Unique content

-          Viral

-          Evangelist

-          Loyalty

Sure, it may seem like it’s more spouting of the same old buzz words BUT there is a reason why those words keep coming up.  If you focus on what they really mean and really absorb the meaning of them, they should guide you through successful campaigns (in Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and in your Blogs, articles etc)

The words are actually related and if you work on each of the layers, you will find social media success.

Social Media Strategies

Quality content – This is a cornerstone of your business.  It determines your credibility.  If you can’t put out something of quality, you won’t get far.  You don’t have to have every answer and cover every point in your articles, posts and tweets.  But you need to put thought, you need to organize it well, it needs to appear professional and polished.  It needs to say something or mean something and it needs to be something that you are proud to have speaking for you publically, because that is what your content does (tweets, posts, articles etc).  Remember that every piece of content you put online via whatever vehicle is like an employee walking around talking to people and networking for you.  Would you send out a guy that smells, can’t answer questions, didn’t brush his hair or tuck in his shirt and is so self-absorbed he can only converse when it’s centered around his needs?  Nope, I sure hope you wouldn’t.  So don’t put out stinky content that pushes your agenda without offering something of value.

Unique content – There is only so much that can be said about a topic BUT that doesn’t mean that you can’t put your unique spin on it.  Think about how to present it in a way that it stands out to others.  They may hear something 20 times and on the 21st time they actually get it.  So it may not be a new discovery you are reporting but you are putting your unique spin on it.  Please don’t misunderstand, retweeting and reposting other quality content is important too and again it’s the spirit of social media – but in addition to that you need to add your own unique material to the conversation or you just become a vehicle for other people’s content and you don’t build credibility and exposure for your own.

Offer value – This one is a no brainer and it’s where most people drop the ball.  You need to offer something of value.  It could be a discount, it could be info, it could be a good laugh, it could be an answer to a question, it could be advice or news.  There are so many ways to offer value.  One of the best ways is to ask people what they are looking for and what they need.  Survey your social media followers – find out what problems they have, what questions they have, what products or services they need – and then offer it to them.

Attract – I think before you can engage someone you need to first attract them.  You attract them with your personality, style, wit, images, compassion, knowledge.   To me this means you have to be “skim worthy” – when someone lands on your Twitter profile or even sees one tweet or post, there has to be something in it that attracts them and makes them want to spend more time.  Once they spend time, they will see you offer value and they will feel engaged and they will like or share.  :)

Engage – We talk about engaging people because we are all inundated with messages: tweets, Facebook posts, Blog posts, RSS feeds, emails, videos, ads.  The ones that people respond to are the ones that engage them. The ones that make them feel connected and feel like it speaks to them.  What I talked about above on Likes and Shares is the need to engage people to get them to do the Liking and Sharing.

Share – We talk about sharing because the goal of social media is getting people to share our content so it spreads and creates more exposure.  So know going in that your goal is to get a share.  Ask yourself if the content you are putting out there (whether it’s a 140 character tweet or a full on Blog post) is worthy of a share?  Is it funny, witty, controversial, information, honest, shocking?  Does it solve a problem or answer a question?  Does it cause people to smile, laugh, gasp, question, think?  Ask yourself what your reaction would be when you read that content and be sure it evokes some kind of reaction. That’s how you get a share (retweet, +1, share on FB etc)

Like – The same thing applies as above, we all want a Like or a +1.  Think about why people bother to “like” something.  It always comes down to the things above – because it caused them to think or feel something that motivated them enough to take action.  They felt moved, inspired, educated, entertained.  You’ll notice the key here is what you put out there has to be about the READER and not about you.  That is what causes people to respond and once they have taken an action, they have a soft spot for you and are more likely to share/retweet/click links/recommend you etc.

There are a lot of other words like evangelist, loyalty, followers, fans etc and they all come down to the same thing.  Pay attention to the above words and you’ll develop the fans/followers and loyalty from evangelists that you are after.

Viral – Note you don’t need any or all of your content to go viral to find success.  Granted, it is the Holy Grail of the likes/shares/retweets.  Everyone wants to go “viral” and see their content spread like wild fire.  The stuff that usually goes viral is usually strong and either funny, attention getting, controversial, shocking etc.  Focus on quality content and a variety of different kinds of content (writing, video, pics etc) and focus on building personality and adding value and offering unique content and you’ll work your way to viral.

Social media is simple.  That doesn’t mean it’s easy but it really is simple.  The best thing you can do is create an action plan so you have some consistency and then run through the words listed above and make sure you have kept all those key elements in mind.

Spend the time to build a foundation and continue to focus on quality content and you’ll be glad you did.  You will get a greater response when you post your calls to action (like sign up for newsletter or webinar or buy a product or service).

Twitter Update

About to head to the airport to hop on a plane but wanted to share the news before I got going.  Here’s a Twitter update from Mashable:

Social Media Overtakes Google…In The UK

Hitwise’s latest report shows social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter got more visits than search engines but ONLY in the UK. According to Hitwise, during May 11.88% of UK Internet visits were to social media sites, while only 11.33% were to search engines.

Hitwise also found out that 55% of the overall Internet visits were for Facebook, while YouTube and Twitter follow in the second and third spots.

Suggestion: If you are running a business in the UK – you need a Facebook Fan Page!!

SEO and Social Media Questions Answered

I’ve asked you to submit your top questions related to growing your business online.  I am working my way through answering the questions.  Here are a couple to get us started:

How do I get links into my site?

An age old question that has left many site owners confused and frustrated.  Google is pretty finicky about what links they do and don’t count towards your link popularity. They are looking for quality long term links into your site that really show that your site is popular.  Tons of link exchanges and too many links acquired too quickly are a bit of a red flag for Google.

Although we all want it to happen overnight, your very best bet with linking is to realize that it does take some time and the best way to get links is to put quality content out there that people can link to.

How do you do that?  Write a great article and post it on your Blog, syndicate it to your Facebook Fan page, syndicate it to article directories, submit your RSS feed to various directories, Tweet your content (and ask for RTs), email your content to your mailing list.  You want to push your content out there any way you can think of.  Just remember people will only link to it if it’s good stuff – so the key to your linking success is to write great content.  Make sure you have a system in place to syndicate the content out to as many places as possible.

Want an article syndication service?  I highly recommend

What social media do I really need to participate in?

Twitter is a must.

Twitter drives traffic, helps spread content, creates relationships, creates amazing networking opportunities, it allows you to participate in real time search and helps you get links into your site and so much more.  Your prospective clients are using Twitter. Can you afford for them not to find you there?

Facebook is a no-brainer. Every business needs a Fan Page.  You may choose not to have a personal profile that you actively update but your business needs a Fan Page no matter what.  Fan Pages are a great way to get exposure, drive traffic to your site and capture leads.  What most people are missing when they create a Fan Page is that there is so much more to a GOOD Fan Page than just a Wall and some photos.  You need custom tabs created to get maximum exposure.  You need to pull your Blog feed into your page.  If you don’t know how to create a killer Fan Page, contact me for details.

Some stats you need to know about Facebook:

  • Facebook has 400 Million Global Users (and growing)
  • Facebook has 100 Million U.S. Users:  Facebook is strong worldwide (Canada has the highest penetration rate), but almost 1/3 of all Facebook users are in the U.S.

  • The average Facebook User Spends 55 Minutes Per Day

  • Real-time Search Is Important: Facebook is now making most content available publicly (unless you adjust your privacy settings). This has tremendous implications for search engine optimization and reputation management.  You need to be on top of real-time search – today.

A recent study (The Sysomos study) found a strong correlation between amount of content (notes, links, photos, videos and custom pages/tabs) and number of fans.

If you are looking to really grow your Fan base, you need something more than a standard Fan page.

Stay tuned as I answer more questions.  Please don’t forget to leave your comments on my Blog.  Share your thoughts and ask any questions you have.

Twitter Training System

There is no escaping all the talk about Twitter and social media.  There is no denying the benefits of Twitter.

However, there is a disconnect between the success some report and the experience the average person/ business has with Twitter.  There is a reason for that…

Twitter is unlike anything we’ve ever done before.  Marketing is changing.  It’s new and it’s not hard but it is a little challenging to embrace without some good background information.

I spent months playing with Twitter, then I spent months ignoring Twitter because I was frustrated and didn’t have the time and then I spent many more months perfecting a system that works after I realized I just couldn’t ignore it any more.

I realized Twitter is not hard – and even more than that, it’s actually pretty fun.  But what holds people back is they don’t fully understand how to use it to generate leads and increase revenue.

I have created a system – a manual and series of videos – that teach you all of the background information and everything you need to know to make Twitter work for you.

For more information, check out

For 24 hours only – from 9am Eastern Time Tuesday January 26 to 9am Eastern Time Wednesday January 27th, if you order my Twitter training system, I will include my Blogging For Dollars report at no extra charge.  I want you to check this out and start tweeting and I’ll resort to shamelessly bribing you if I have to!  :)

Blogging and Twitter go hand in hand and there are insider secrets that help you get more out of both Twitter and Blogging.  My training system and Blogging for dollars report share those important details – the keys to success.

Check it out now.

Check it out and let me know what you think!
