“Change before you have to.”
— Jack Welch, Businessman
Love that quote! Although it applies to so many different areas of life, today I’m going to talk about it as it relates to SEO.
The writing has always been on the wall for spammers, black hat artists and even people that didn’t intentionally do anything bad but they somehow wound up making bad decisions. Google has always been clear that they intended to clean up “web spam” and improve their search results.
A year ago Google’s Panda was born (February 24th is actually his birthday) and it took everyone by surprise. By the time the Penguin came along, people were reeling and in many cases feeling attacked by both animals.
The best thing you could do is go back in time and clean up your link profile and clean up your content and on-page optimization. But if your time machine isn’t working, that’s not going to be an option. The next best thing you can do is try to anticipate Google’s next move and try to stay a step ahead.
It really doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that Google is going after links with a vengeance and also after low quality/thin content. So now is the time to change things up and fix the problems on your site and in your link profile.
If you weren’t hit by Panda or Penguin, consider yourself lucky and be proactive in making sure you don’t get hit by it in the future. If you were hit, it’s likely only going to get worse. It’s certainly not going to get better on its own.
So now is the time to take action, and make changes before Google slaps you and forces you to do it in panic mode.
