No gPhone
Google Inc. announced its much anticipated plans for the mobile phone market on Monday. Google is developing a cellphone software package that they promise will bring the Internet to cellphones in an exciting and new way.
There are no plans for a “gPhone†(to rival Apple Inc.’s iPhone).
Google says they will work with as many as four cellphone manufacturers to bring devices equipped with its software to market by the second half of next year.
“Today’s announcement is more ambitious than any single ‘Google Phone’ that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks,†Google CEO Eric Schmidt said. “Our vision is that the powerful platform we’re unveiling will power thousands of different phone models.â€
Google’s mobile operating system will be distributed for free, with Google’s revenue coming from selling ads and services to mobile users in much the same way as it does from its desktop search engine.
More exciting news: Google’s mobile system will be computer code that is “open source,†meaning it can be openly distributed among programmers. The idea is that programmers will independently develop new applications and uses for smart phones, further enhancing their value.
