SEO and Social Media Questions Answered
I’ve asked you to submit your top questions related to growing your business online. I am working my way through answering the questions. Here are a couple to get us started:
How do I get links into my site?
An age old question that has left many site owners confused and frustrated. Google is pretty finicky about what links they do and don’t count towards your link popularity. They are looking for quality long term links into your site that really show that your site is popular. Tons of link exchanges and too many links acquired too quickly are a bit of a red flag for Google.
Although we all want it to happen overnight, your very best bet with linking is to realize that it does take some time and the best way to get links is to put quality content out there that people can link to.
How do you do that? Write a great article and post it on your Blog, syndicate it to your Facebook Fan page, syndicate it to article directories, submit your RSS feed to various directories, Tweet your content (and ask for RTs), email your content to your mailing list. You want to push your content out there any way you can think of. Just remember people will only link to it if it’s good stuff – so the key to your linking success is to write great content. Make sure you have a system in place to syndicate the content out to as many places as possible.

What social media do I really need to participate in?
Twitter is a must.
Twitter drives traffic, helps spread content, creates relationships, creates amazing networking opportunities, it allows you to participate in real time search and helps you get links into your site and so much more. Your prospective clients are using Twitter. Can you afford for them not to find you there?
Facebook is a no-brainer. Every business needs a Fan Page. You may choose not to have a personal profile that you actively update but your business needs a Fan Page no matter what. Fan Pages are a great way to get exposure, drive traffic to your site and capture leads. What most people are missing when they create a Fan Page is that there is so much more to a GOOD Fan Page than just a Wall and some photos. You need custom tabs created to get maximum exposure. You need to pull your Blog feed into your page. If you don’t know how to create a killer Fan Page, contact me for details.
Some stats you need to know about Facebook:
- Facebook has 400 Million Global Users (and growing)
-
Facebook has 100 Million U.S. Users
: Facebook is strong worldwide (Canada has the highest penetration rate), but almost 1/3 of all Facebook users are in the U.S. -
The average Facebook User Spends 55 Minutes Per Day
- Real-time Search Is Important: Facebook is now making most content available publicly (unless you adjust your privacy settings). This has tremendous implications for search engine optimization and reputation management. You need to be on top of real-time search – today.
A recent study (The Sysomos study) found a strong correlation between amount of content (notes, links, photos, videos and custom pages/tabs) and number of fans.
If you are looking to really grow your Fan base, you need something more than a standard Fan page.

what are the steps for SEO process for the sites ?
Is it really possible to follow 1,000 plus people on Twitter?
Would be good seeing an in-depth article on how to work your FaceBok settings from an SEO standpoint. Good stuff otherwise, and keep up the great work. Thanks for keeping the info flowing my way!
Nice article on link building. One thing that seems to work well, I think, is to submit your blog entries to a number of the better social media sites, such as Delicious and Digg. Also, it helps to ping your blog entries so that various blog directories and blog distribution sites have access to your current entries. I also notice that some Twitter comments are being indexed by the search engines. The world is changing rapidly.
Thanks Jennifer. We post regularly on Twitter and have a Facebook fan page. If you run a business, other must haves are LinkedIn and Plaxo. Also, we find posting regularly on industry forums very useful.

Good piece, Jennifer. I find Twitter pretty valuable now for driving traffic. Using search.twitter.com and typing in relevant keywords/phrases helps find people with similar interests, for those of you who haven’t used it yet.
Nitin, If you are on my mailing list you should have received Optimization Step By Step. Check that out, it will help you out!
Nick,
It is possible to follow any number of people on Twitter (as long as you follow their rules). Can you elaborate on what you mean? Are you asking if it’s hard to keep up with what that many people are saying or are just having a hard time imagining reaching that number right now?
Nick, it depends what you mean by ‘follow’…it’s true that to really follow all of them and pay attention to their Tweets would be a fulltime job. It’s a good point, to ‘follow’ means in practice that you wish to be followed, but if you don’t try to follow at least some of them then it turns into a kind of glorified traffic exchange at some point.
It seems quite a time commitment to read / follow 1,000 plus people. I am wondering how practical that is. Looking at rough numbers say 25% of those you are following tweat twice a day for a total of 500 tweats. If it takes one 5 seconds to scan a tweat you will need over 40 minutes just to keep up with Twitter. My point is people are spending a good deal of time on Twitter or they are not closely following those 1,000 plus.
Hi Jennifer, this post is short but meaningful. I’m new on your list an don’t remember receiving your “Optimization Step By Step”. Would appreciate if you can send it to me or point the URL where I can find it. Thanks
Looks like I’m still doing everything right! At the very least, we’re doing things the same. Thank you for the great information.
Jonecir – email me and I’ll make sure you get the link!!
Nick,
I user TweetDeck and I set up lists of people I know I want to read for sure and I also set up filters so I can segment out keyword phrases that I know I want to see tweets on. Then I pay most attention to those tweets and just skim the rest. The truth is some days you read and absorb more and other days, it’s less. You also get used to it and get more efficient. When I first started I couldn’t imagine keeping up with more than 100. TweetDeck organization really helps me keep track of what I don’t want to miss. You should definitely try it. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
Very excellent articles. One can just apply your thoughts on his/her website, it will pull traffic definitely. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Jennifer:

I will have to start using TweetDeck. Thanks for that, and yes, Jennifer knows a lot about SEO!
Awww thanks Larry.
I didn’t like TweetDeck at first, it felt complicated – but once you learn it, it saves time and really helps me not miss stuff. Good luck to you! Send me your Twitter username and I’ll make sure I’m following you.
