The Power of the Search Engines
Here’s a perfect example of the power of the engines….
Last week The New York Times announced that they’re opening “Times Select†to everyone – which means you don’t need a subscription for access.Â
The Times said that many more readers started coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites instead of coming directly to NYTimes.com.
These visitors were unable to access articles behind the pay wall and less likely to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users.
So, opening up access to these pages was seen as opportunities for more page views and therefore increased advertising revenue.
“What wasn’t anticipated was the explosion in how much of our traffic would be generated by Google, by Yahoo and some others,†Ms. Schiller said.
